Bits & Bytes e-zine, Vol3 #6 Human Capital in ICT systems

Under the theme: “Human Capital in ICT systems: the Jamaican Knowledge worker”, the 2015 iteration for the JCS conference was launched with fanfare. On hand for the launch several business leaders, ICT industry companies and professionals. The Biztech forum will be held at the Hyatt Ziva, Rose Hall on October 29 to October 31, 2015. A draft schedule of events was presented at the launch and features topics from emerging trends relevant to Jamaica as well as a decided timely focus on people as an asset. State Minister in the Ministry of Science Technology Energy and Mining, Hon Julian Robinson had this to say; ”The theme of this conference is timely and relevant. Now more than ever we need to empower and value people as an asset to economic growth.” The Minister went on to pledge support for the conference and the JCS even as it continue to make significant contributions in areas such as Cyber-security, Open Data and mobile application development.

Also on hand at the launch was Hon. Dr. Andrew Wheatley, Opposition spokesman on ICT. “The JCS is important to the development of ICT in Jamaica. This conference has traditionally looked at issues that are important to the industry while seeking to further develop professionals.” This sentiment was also echoed by Dean M Smith, Conference Chairman for the 2015 conference. Smith said “The personal development potential and industry analysis theme of these conference sessions cannot be over-emphasized.” . He also applauded the efforts of the Events team lead by Glenice Leachman (VP – JCS Event’s committee) and Richard Shaw (JCS Council member and MC for the launch event). Keynote speaker*, Edward Alexander expressed his passion for the conference theme as a topic of focus.

The award banquet at the conference will honor some individuals who have served with distinction within the industry and as professionals. They will be awarded the JCS Lifetime Achievement Excellence award. The JCS President’s award will also be made to the project executed over the past 18 months that exemplifies good IT Governance and Project Management while utilizing country relevant emerging technology.
