Bits & Bytes e-zine, Vol2 #11 JCS Western Chapter - Meeting Review

The Jamaica Computer Society Western Chapter (JCS-WC) had another in its series of members’ meeting at the Montego Bay Community College on Thursday November 13th, 2014 featuring presentations on the impact of proper IT Security Management on local BPO businesses, given by Mr. Yoni Epstein, CEO of ITEL-BPO (http://islandoutsourcers.com/ ) and Mr. Shoaib Shaffe, Principal officer at Nearshore Inbound Call Experts (NICE - http://nearshoreinboundcallexperts.com/ ). Our vendor spotlight of the evening was XSOMO Ltd. (http://www.xsomo.com.jm/) and they demonstrated the robustness of their local service & product offerings.

The meeting was well attended by local stakeholders in the Information Technology sector of Western Jamaica. Chief Executive Officers from the BPO Sector, Information Technology Managers & System Administrators came together to hear the concerns from Business leadership about IT Security, came together to learn about practical technological solutions available locally and came together to network with their peers in the Industry. Member of the JCS Western Chapter Organizing Committee & JCS Council Member, Mr. Douglas Williamson guided the meeting through a series of presentations which evoked lively discussion and exchange of information between the attendees and presenters

The presentations from Mr. Yoni Epstein & Mr. Shoaib Shaffee brought home the important role IT professionals play in keeping their business ventures and customers safe in an environment which has major risks for going concerns as exemplified with the recent Target & Home Depot security breaches. Mr. Epstein encouraged the professionals present to join together with the JCS Western Chapter, to influence the legislation governing the ICT profession in a proactive way. The members unanimously agreed that they were mostly unaware of the wide of technical expertise and local talent employed by Mr. Shaffee’s Nearshore Inbound Call Experts http://nearshoreinboundcallexperts.com/). The wide range of technical services was bolstered by the large turnout of his team members to the meeting.

Mr. Neil Williams, Senior Manager with XSOMO (http://www.xsomo.com.jm/) shared the range of technical services & solutions that XSOMO has to offer. Corporate entities in Western Jamaica can benefit from their Electronic Content Management (ECM) solutions which are widely in use in Jamaica today. Neil and Mr. Douglas Aris demonstrated the wide range of functionality available from the OnBase ECM software retailed by XSOMO in Jamaica (http://www.onbase.com/). XSOMO is an authorized solution provider of the Hyland product OnBase. XSOMO’s team was bolstered by their Technical Services manager, Mr. Andrew Wilkinson who explained the range of IT Infrastructure services offered in Jamaica based on their strong partnerships with Microsoft (Silver), Citrix (Silver), Dell (Preferred) and VMWare (Preferred). XSOMO’s track record of implementing ECM solutions for Jamaican organizations, like STATIN and Jamaica National, gave the attendees appreciation of the business problems that have been successfully addressed with local expertise.

Since it is well known, that Geese can travel 70% more distance together as a flock, than they would individually, Mr. Williamson made an appeal for the professionals present to join up and support the Western Chapter in greater numbers. “Together we can support the IT based businesses and help each other to develop and grow professionally.” With the support of the professionals present and those that will join the Chapter, he promised that the organizing committee will be hard at work in 2015 to bring more value to the professionals who participate.
